北方国际集团成立于1998年3月8日，是市政府重点支持和授权经营国有资产的大型企业集团。集团核心企业-北方国际集团有限公司，是天津市人民政府批准组建的控股公司，是原国家外经贸部批准授予进出口经营权的大型外贸企业，注册资金3.58亿元人民币。拥有直属企业28家，有资产连带关系的各类企业130多家，其中海外企业、办事机构30多家。自1999年起连续位列年度中国500强企业、全国500家最大进出口企业和出口200强企业；2005、2006年中国服务业企业500强 ； “2005年度中国管理100强企业”。
集团经营广泛，涉足的领域有：货物和技术的进出口贸易，国内贸易，房地产开发，以及仓储、运输、劳务合作、对外承包工程、信息、咨询、广告、展览、货代、海陆空联运、国际快递、物流分拨等服务贸易。
